Heads of Departments of STANDARTINFORM met with the employees of the Russian State Library who was responsible for digitization and translation of collections of the Russian State Library in machine-readable formats.
This visit was organized according to an arrangement achieved in course of the meeting of Director General of STANDARTINFORM Viacheslav Vitushkin and Director General of the Russian State Library Vladimir Gnezdilov that was held at the end of last month.
STANDARTINFORM got acquainted with experience of the largest Russian library concerning process of conversion of texts into electronic and digital formats. STANDARTINFORM could take this information into account during carrying out works of such kind with the documents from the Federal Information Collection of Standards.
STANDARTINFORM was appointed as an Operator of the Federal Information Collection of Standards.
Director of the Department of Forming and Maintaining Information resources Evgeny Makoveev informed that Federal Information Collection of Standards contained cancelled and replaced documents on standardization and their cases that were kept only in paper format.
Employees of STANDARTINFORM also noted that employees of the Russian State Library provided details concerning scanning of the documents and also told about the applied software, their experience of use of different types of scanning equipment (for example planetary scanners), technologies of scanning and digitization of books and documents, difficulties arising and ways of their solving.
Head of the Department of Information Technologies of STANDARTINFORM Mikhail Shirokov highlighted that it was possible to work with documents of electronic library and remote network resources from computers in reading rooms of the Russian State Library while part of such documents were available from any computer with access to the Internet.
He also noted that that practice could be used in the activities of STANDARTINFORM.
Acting Director of the Department of Printing Petr Odintsov summed up that this meeting was very useful and fruitful. He also said that experience of the State Russian Library should be analyzed for further application in terms of storage and converting into machine-readable formats of the documents of national standardization system.
Reference: Unique collection of Russian and foreign documents in 367 foreign languages are contained in the Russian State Library. Size of their Collections exceeds 46 million storage units (as at January 1, 2017). More than 1,3 million of documents are digitized.
